Manitowoc, Wisconsin's Maritime Capital, was founded in 1851 and grew into a city by 1870. It's shipbuilding heritage started in 1847 when the first schooner, The Citizen, was built in the village. The shipbuilding industry continued to grow and contributed to Manitowoc establishing itself in the fishing and trading on the Great Lakes. World War II saw it contribute many landing crafts, tankers and, most notably, its well-known combat submarines (even losing one of its own citizens, Eugene Sieracki, on the Manitowoc-built USS Golet in 1944) to the Pacific battles. Visitors to this beautiful city can see a World War II submarine, the USS Cobia, at the Manitowoc Maritime Museum or see 15th century works at the Rahr West Museum.
